Laconia, It’s Time to Step Up: Affordable Housing Needs Advocates, Not Just Complaints
Everyone loves to talk about the housing crisis in New Hampshire. We hear it all the time—businesses can’t find workers, young professionals and retirees are being priced out, and rental prices are skyrocketing beyond reach. But here’s the truth: talking isn’t enough.
Last year, 18 communities in NH earned the prestigious Housing Champion designation, unlocking millions in funding, grants, and resources to develop workforce and affordable housing. Laconia wasn’t one of them. Not because we don’t need it—but because the loudest voices were the ones shouting “no.”
I recently had a conversation with an elderly, former military gentleman who summed up what we’re up against. He refuses to tell people he’s retired—because, in his words, “then they’ll expect me to contribute.” (Imagine that—being part of a community!) He then went on to insist that there’s “no room” for those who can’t afford to live in the Lakes Region.
Let’s break that down.
There’s room for empty storefronts, for businesses unable to hire because their employees can’t afford to live here. There’s room for increasing home prices that are forcing lifelong residents out. But somehow, there’s no room for the very people who keep this community running?
That’s not just selfish—it’s economically disastrous.
The Reality Check NH Can’t Ignore
Here’s where we are:
Workforce Housing = Economic Growth. Businesses across NH are desperate for workers, but if employees can’t afford to live here, they can’t take the jobs.
Housing Prices Are at Historic Highs. The median price for a single-family home in NH just hit $500,000. That’s the highest in state history, marking 58 straight months of price increases.
Renters Are Struggling, Too. A 2-bedroom apartment now averages $1,420/month—and 87% of New Hampshire residents can’t afford that based on median incomes.
Housing Champions Get Priority Funding. The communities that earn the designation gain access to state infrastructure funds, municipal housing grants, and potential low-interest loans—resources that could make real solutions possible in Laconia.
And yet, last year when the Housing Champion opportunity was on the table, our City Council mostly heard from those against it. Those in favor? Silent.
If we want Laconia to be part of the next round of Housing Champions in 2025, we need to stop assuming someone else will speak up for us.
What You Can Do Right Now
1. Tell the City Council You Support Applying. The application window opens in April 2025. If we wait until then to speak up, it will be too late.
2. Engage in the Conversation. A Laconia Economic & Housing Facebook Page is being created—join in, stay informed, and contribute.
3. Spread the Word. Share this message. Talk to local business owners who need workers but can’t find them. Remind your neighbors that a community only thrives when everyone has a place in it.
The simple truth? If advocates don’t show up, the people shouting “no” will win again.
So, Laconia, what’s it going to be? Do we want to be part of the solution or just part of the problem?
